Travel Tips for Kerala: What to Expect in 2025

1. Dress Modestly Yet Comfortably

While Kerala is progressive, it’s best to wear light cotton clothes that also respect local culture—especially at temples or rural homestays. Women can opt for loose kurtas or long skirts, and men for shirts and trousers.

2. Plan Around the Monsoons

Kerala’s monsoon (June to September) is magical but wet. If you’re visiting during this time, pack rain gear, quick-dry clothing, and waterproof bags for your gadgets.

3. Choose Eco-Friendly Accommodations

Kerala is known for its commitment to sustainable tourism. Houseboats, tea plantations, and jungle lodges often follow green practices. Support them by minimizing plastic waste and using biodegradable toiletries.

4. Be Prepared for Varied Terrain

From coastal beaches to hilly Munnar, Kerala’s landscape changes quickly. Pack footwear suited for both leisurely strolls and light hikes.

5. Try Ayurveda, But Check First

Kerala is famous for Ayurvedic therapies. Book only with certified centres and consult your physician beforehand if you have any medical conditions.

6. Use Local Transport with Care

Auto-rickshaws and local buses are cheap and cheerful, but confirm fares in advance. For longer trips, consider hiring a cab through your hotel or trusted service.

7. Respect Religious Spaces

Temples in Kerala may not allow entry to non-Hindus or have strict dress codes. Always ask before entering and follow the rules respectfully.

8. Keep Cash for Small Shops

While digital payments are growing, some rural areas still prefer cash. Keep small denominations handy, especially in villages or at local markets.

9. Embrace Slow Travel

Kerala is best experienced slowly—savoring each spice-laden meal, boat ride, or folk performance. Don’t cram too much into one day.

10. Drink Bottled or Filtered Water

Avoid tap water and carry a reusable bottle that can be filled with filtered water at your hotel or eco-stay.
